Highlighting his iconic robotic + a body of work that spans more than 30 years, this book is a visual feast of inspirational challenges set for the rest of the world.

Koolhaas

After mentioning the formidable architect duo Herzog & de Meuron in the Tokyo post, I thought it prudent to touch on their vunderful VitraHaus.

Nestled in the Vitra Campus amongst other formidables: Frank Gehry (Vitra Design Museum, 1989), Zaha Hadid, Tadao Ando (Conference Pavilion, 1993) and all round hero Buckminster Fuller - this crazy series of stacked pitched-roof boxes was designed to display the Home Collection (design classics & re-editions/products by contemporary designers).

The concept of the VitraHaus connects two themes - the archetypal house and stacked volumes. Employing a domestic scale to display domestic goods this cantilevered five-storey building of structural extrusions and glazed gable ends, affords a cheerfully chaotic multifaceted assemblage.

Millenium Manners Matter

These vintage Tokyo subway manner posters appeared in the Tokyo subways between 1976 and 1982. A revival of public education in Melbourne could no harm...

Don't throw chewing gum on the platform (September 1976)
Even Superman is no match for chewing gum discarded on the train platform.

The Seat Monopolizer (July 1976)
Inspired by Charlie Chaplin's "The Great Dictator," this poster encourages passengers not to take up more seat space than necessary.

Coughing on the platform (January 1979)
Modeled after the paintings of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, this poster titled "Hōmu de Concon" (coughing on the platform) urges people not to smoke on the train platforms during designated non-smoking hours, making a play on the words "concon" (coughing sound) and "cancan" (French chorus line dance).

Dream at home (December 1981)
This poster featuring Doraemon dressed as Santa, encourages Christmas and end-of-year drunks not to pass out on the train.

You've had too much to drink (October 1976)
This October 1976 poster of a drinking Santa is addressed to the drunks on the train. Loosely translated, it reads: "I look like Santa because you've had too much to drink. It's only October. If you drink, be considerate of the other passengers."

a nightcap, neat

Marc Jacobs, Tokyo: Stephan Jaklitsch Architects

Being constructed in Omotesando next to the equally inspiring Prada store (Herzog & de Meuron - right), this 3,000 sq ft project, the most recent in the design series of Marc Jacobs stores around the world by Stephan Jaklitsch Architects, has already won an Award of Excellence (AIA, New York).

By night the architecture frames the light - a grand glass street lamp, an ice cube in a glass of whiskey, a nightcap, neat.

By day, the joy of MJ, Mochiron!
